Mass Effect 4 Teaser Hints at New Role for Liara
About thirty seconds of distorted speech-filled teaser film for the next Mass Effect game was published by BioWare recently, however the clip did seem to depict the building of a Mass Relay, and one fan has deciphered the dialogue. According to this, whatever mankind is up to, it’s doing it in violation of the council from the next Mass Effect game.
Mass Effect 4 Teaser Hints at New Role for Liara
It is unclear how a Mass Relay is being reconstructed defiantly, yet this might be a Super Mass Relay linking the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxy. The fact that Cerberus seems to be in charge of the rebuilding is not encouraging. It seems plausible, in light of Mass Effect 3’s Destroy ending, that this technology is being developed using scraps of Reaper technology. There would probably be a lot of rules on who may control and/or utilise these assets.
To be sure, here you can hear BioWare’s Michael Gamble give credit to Twitter user @eughenia sh for deciphering the broadcast. It seems to be happening between some extraterrestrial culture that doesn’t speak common and Liara, either directly or via some other communication. The last line, said by Liara T’Soni to the council, is ominous for the future game: “they should know by now not to underestimate human resistance!” Gamble retweeted this statement as well, suggesting that Liara’s titles include “REDACTED>,” “Doctor,” and “Shadow Broker.” The marketing for Mass Effect 4 has focused heavily on Liara and will continue to do so.
The wording here may be cryptic, but a teaser like this does open the door to tinfoil hat territory. First of all, the official Mass Effect Twitter account expressed gratitude to its “Agents” for deciphering the communication, implying that the new player would most likely begin the game as a member of a group that includes these “Agents.” Another spacecraft with a Quarian captain is now documenting the building, suggesting that these Agents are still keeping an eye on humans and maybe other inhabitants of the galaxy despite the loss of the Mass Relays. The title was changed because of the potential involvement of Liara.
One of these Agents will presumably be the player’s starting character in the future game, and they will journey with Liara. BioWare is trying all it can in this Mass Effect 4 clip to cast the building of this Mass Relay in a negative light (Cerberus’ participation, Liara’s conversation), so it will be interesting to see whether this is a false herring. Mass Effect: Defiance has a good ring to it, but it’s not likely to be the title. The game might take place in a Milky Way Galaxy that has been divided and may be overseen by a scared, strong new council.
