Over the weekend, Digital Extremes, the company behind Warframe, revealed their newest game: Soulframe. Also, this is not a sequel to the last one.

Instead of a sci-fi shooter, Soulframe is an MMO focused on physical action set in a fantasy world. Not really a sequel, but you can’t blame director Steve Sinclair for abandoning Warframe after more than a decade in charge of the project.

When Sinclair spoke to the Washington Post about the new project, he said, “Where Warframe is centred on shooting, this one’s focused on combat.” When compared to Warframe, this one will be a lot slower and heavier. “However, there are still many parallels to the genre that we are familiar with.”

Sinclair explains that the idea for the universe itself comes from movies like Princess Mononoke and The NeverEnding Story, despite the fact that the teaser seems like Digital Extremes has been playing a lot of Souls. It’s a gaming world that’s “a touch unhappy about what’s been done to it,” which means that “the earth underfoot tends to move during the day,” resulting in procedurally-generated scenes located in locations like caverns.

For Soulframe, Sinclair says that the team intends it to have a lot higher emphasis on exploration, with a big, open-world centre as its overworld. According to the Washington Post, he is looking for the “brief session but high immersion” situation in which you sign in and leave your yurt and the world seems like it has gone on without you.

When it comes to design and objectives, it all seems a little hazy and “back of the napkin.” If the video wasn’t enough of a hint, the game is still in its early stages of development, but the developers want to have some players try out rough versions of it “within a year.”
