Xbox chief says Activision Blizzard games aren’t coming to Xbox Game Pass until 2024
Phil Spencer, Xbox chief and Microsoft Gaming CEO, has announced that Activision Blizzard games will not be included to Xbox Game Pass anytime soon. Spencer reveals in the newest official Xbox podcast that no Activision Blizzard titles will be added to Xbox Game Pass in the near weeks, and that none will be added until 2024.
Spencer had this to say:
The regulatory procedure took so lengthy… that we weren’t able to come in and collaborate with Activision Blizzard on that back catalog work. We’re commencing that process now that the deal is closed, but there remains work to be done. I believe the Activision Twitter handle mentioned 2024, and I believe that is correct. I wish there was some kind of hidden celebratory drop coming up in the next several weeks, but there isn’t.
Before the Microsoft contract was finalized, Activision Blizzard said on X (previously Twitter) that Modern Warfare III and Diablo IV will not be available on Xbox Game Pass this year. However, until Phil Spencer’s explanation today, it remained unclear regarding the future of older Activision Blizzard games.
“I’m sure there will be some disappointment,” Spencer confesses. “Because this is a long-term acquisition, the fact that we aren’t hitting day one with a slew of games dropping into Game Pass is a little disappointing, but I’m very excited about the future.” And I just want to make clear that that is where we are.”
Many Xbox users anticipated Microsoft to quickly add earlier versions of Call of Duty to Xbox Game Pass. Last week, Windows Central predicted that “a ton of new games will hit Xbox Game Pass the very minute the deal is finalized,” but that did not happen.
Some of the anticipation for Xbox Game Pass additions stemmed from Microsoft’s decision to offer 20 Bethesda games to Game Pass just two days after the purchase was completed. In July, just before of the initial Activision Blizzard acquisition deadline, Microsoft also went out of its way to patch classic Xbox 360 Call of Duty titles.
