Resident Evil 6 Gets a PS1-Style Demake

An avid player of the Resident Evil series decided to produce his own version of the game, a demake of Resident Evil 6, which reworks the game so that it looks and plays like a PlayStation 1 game. With the rise in popularity of retro aesthetics, era-appropriate demakes of classic video games have proliferated, giving them the appearance and feel of when they first came out many decades ago.

With its middling reception, Resident Evil 6 serves as a bridge between the series’ great classics and Capcom’s current reimagining of the horror foundations of the IP. Resident Evil 7 placed the brakes on the action to concentrate on the horror and survival elements that made Resident Evil 5 so much more realistic than its successor, Resident Evil 6. It seems that despite this, some people have at least a soft spot in their hearts for RE6.

A person going by the moniker Rustic Games has uploaded gameplay footage from their demake of Resident Evil 6 to their YouTube account and Twitter. Despite its seeming lack of scope, this new demo is very much like the Resident Evil 5 demake that Rustic Games released not too long ago, with comparable mechanics and animations. It seems to reason that in order to faithfully recreate the retro visual aesthetic of games released for the original PlayStation platform, Rustic Games would have to follow a stringent set of asset and gameplay standards.

Resident Evil 6 is often regarded as Capcom’s “jumping the shark” with the IP, placing it towards the bottom of most tier rankings for the Resident Evil series. It’s possible that Capcom intended to separate their newer horror products from RE6, which many fans didn’t end up loving, thus although following RE games don’t appear to disregard the events of RE6 directly, they also don’t overtly mention them either.

Some players are still convinced that Resident Evil 6 is worth their time, as seen by Rustic Games’ recent efforts. While the game’s primary combat cycle was met with some criticism, it did provide a wide variety of interesting choices to the player and was more dynamic and dramatic than virtually any previous game in the series. As a result, it was clear that there was a chasm between classic Capcom and its player base when certain aspects of Resident Evil titles failed to resonate with fans.

The demakes that Rustic Games creates seldom become fully playable games. Instead, they’re meant to be contained presentations that offer hypothetical “what if” questions to the audience. The inventory management system in Resident Evil 4 served as inspiration for the witty puzzle game Save Room, which is a good option for those who want a Resident Evil fix without sacrificing replay value.
