NCSoft Shares First Gameplay Trailer for Upcoming MMO Shooter

The first gameplay footage for NCSoft’s next massively multiplayer online third-person shooter, Project LLL, has been released. The game was developed and published in South Korea. Earlier in 2022, the gaming firm announced its plans to broaden its portfolio by creating a variety of titles across many genres. The massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) Guild Wars 2 and the Lineage series are NCSoft’s bread and butter.

ArenaNet, the studio responsible for creating Guild Wars 2, as well as former NCSoft subsidiary Carbine Studios, Paragon Studios, and Destination Games founded by Robert and Richard Garriott, are just a few examples of the companies that have contributed to the success of these games. Recently, the business has started teasing one of their next games, codenamed “Project LLL,” but it is unclear who is in charge of development.

NCSoft has offered new information on the game with the release of a nine-minute gameplay trailer, a developer talk video, and an interview with Seeder Jaehyun Bae, the project head. Project LLL is a AAA third-person MMO shooter that will be released in 2024. This is a departure from the company’s regular RPG fare. Bae claims that NCSoft’s goal is to pioneer a new kind of shooter that stands in stark contrast to the current crop of looter games and battle royales.

The Unreal Engine 5 game will take place in the future, and according to Bae, the genre of alternative history where a “specific event” has led things to occur differently from reality is a good fit for the tale of Project LLL. The developer hints at the timeframes players might anticipate to meet by mentioning the 23rd century and the Byzantine Empire of the 10th century in an interview.

In the gameplay teaser, we see many locations in Seoul, Korea; Bae reveals that the development team travelled to Seoul to inspect and photograph real-world monuments including Gwanghwamun Building Forest and Gyeongbokgung Palace, which were subsequently modified to fit the game’s alternative setting. Fans may also recognise influences from other works of science fiction and fantasy in Project LLL; among them are Foundation by Asimov, Dune by Frank Herbert, and the science fiction of Philip K. Dick, including Blade Runner and Total Recall.

In Project LLL, users may cooperate or compete in an open universe that spans more than 30 kilometres of space. Procedurally produced material that “reacts according to the player’s circumstances” will be used to combat monotony. It’s unclear what this implies at this point, and Bae has said the development team is still trying to address any technological problems that may come up when applying this technology to the internet environment.
