Microsoft Expects GTA 6 to Launch in 2024

Microsoft’s latest statement regarding its ongoing acquisition of Activision Blizzard includes a claim that the company anticipates the release of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6 sometime in 2024. This is a rather surprising piece of information, but it shouldn’t be taken at face value because it isn’t the first major reveal to come up in Microsoft and Sony’s discussions over the aforementioned acquisition.

Before a series of leaks about the new Grand Theft Auto appeared online, very little detail was known about the game. It was unclear at the time that a sequel to Rockstar’s flagship game was even being made, but the studio confirmed shortly thereafter that the rumours were accurate. Despite the lack of official details, fans are eager to learn when Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released.

On page 24 of Microsoft’s latest Activision Blizzard statement to the CMA (the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority), the release date of Grand Theft Auto 6 is mentioned. An intriguing nugget in and of itself, but it’s important to note right off the bat that Microsoft is referencing an article from Tech Radar for this citation, rather than providing its own internal source. This may disappoint some fans who were hoping for official confirmation from Microsoft. A broad launch window in 2024 doesn’t sound out of place, but the information’s veracity depends on the reader’s perspective.

Take-Two has stated that the leaks will not impact the development of GTA 6, and it is highly unlikely that a similar incident will occur in the future, as both the publisher and Rockstar Games will have increased security measures in response to this incident. Therefore, up-to-date information about the game’s possible release dates would be scarce, and it stands to reason that Microsoft wouldn’t want to flippantly mention something that important in a statement like this one.

Microsoft is not pleased with regulators’ remarks regarding the Activision Blizzard acquisition, and this statement is intended to show that the acquisition is in fact beneficial to consumers. In a market that has been “long dominated by Sony,” Microsoft argues that this merger will increase competition and is therefore “fundamentally pro-competitive.” Microsoft suggested that Sony could try different strategies, such as delaying the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, to increase its market share.

The Grand Theft Auto fanbase hopes for an official announcement soon, and it’s possible that one is on the horizon. Whatever the case may be, if GTA 6 were to come out in 2024, it would be well over a decade after the release of GTA 5.
