The Amazon Fashion Innovation Award was created just for Kardashian and her shapewear line SKIMS. In addition to Kardashian, inaugural awardees were company co-founder and CEO Jens Grede and founding partner and chief product officer Emma Grede.
On Monday night, actress Natasha Lyonne presented the annual CFDA Fashion Awards with designers Joseph Altuzarra, Gabriela Hearst, Aurora James, Lazaro Hernandez, and Jack McCollough. The event celebrated 60 years of the Fashion Group International and the history of American fashion.
Kardashian told the celebrity-studded crowd, which included Khloe and Kendall and their mother Kris Jenner, that the company has placed a “strong emphasis” since its launch on “continuing to shape the industry to embrace size equality and diversity as a fixture and not just a trend,” and she saw that many in the audience were doing just that.
The award was given to Kardashian by Martha Stewart, who had to interrupt her acceptance speech to answer the phone. Turn off your phone, mom,” Kardashian said to Jenner, drawing chuckles from the crowd.
Kendall and Kylie Jenner, along with Khloe Kardashian, were there to support their sister as she won her award on stage.
Law Roach was presented with a brand new award this year that specifically recognises the achievements of stylists.
A queen was born on the South Side of Chicago once upon a time. Kerry Washington recreated Roach’s origin tale, describing her as “a queen who was a frightening force for good and for beauty, and she transformed the landscape of fashion simply by being her.”
He let everyone know that in 2016, he was working as Zendaya’s stylist and had to miss the CFDA Awards.
The waiters brought out your dinner, and I thought, “One day I’m going to be on that stage.” Roach said, “I am proof that everything is possible.”
On an evening when several designers won awards and Lenny Kravitz was honoured with the CFDA’s Fashion Icon Award, presenters included Bradley Cooper, Trevor Noah, and Christina Ricci.
Cooper remarked of Kravitz, “(Kravitz is) effortless, cool, eclectic, brave.” He has it, whatever it is. And no one is hotter than you when it comes to fashion. Nobody else in the music industry today can get away with wearing leather and leopard print like Lenny.
“I had my own own store in my mom’s closet. Growing up in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Kravitz recalled, “I put on scarfs, belts, platform boots, boas copying my idols from the Jackson Five, Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone, David Bowie, and Miles Davis.”
As of last year, Zendaya held the record for youngest Icon award winner. Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Pharrell Williams, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez are just few of the artists that have won this award in the past.
Cher showed there unexpectedly as well to celebrate Patti Wilson as a stylist. Cher once stated, “Fashion is to be joyful and feared, and Patti Wilson is fearless.”
Raul Lopez won the prize for accessories design, while Elena Velez won the award for rising designer in the United States.
In the categories for American designers, Catherine Holstein of KHAITE received the award for womenswear, while Emily Adams Bode Aujla won the award for menswear.
To recognise the late designer’s impact on the fashion industry worldwide, the Board of Trustee presented Virgil Abloh with their Award. His wife, Shannon Abloh, accepted the medal on his behalf and reflected on how his achievements at such a young age inspired the generations to come.
