GTA: San Andreas Fan Project Turns the Sandbox Game Into a Horror Experience
A fan-made horror game with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’s open world gameplay mechanics was recently released. Rockstar’s 2004 instalment in the GTA series is infamous for having one of the series’ most frustrating missions, wherein the player is repeatedly warned to “damn train” themselves. Despite this, it is still a highly regarded entry in the long-running franchise, often considered part of a “trilogy” with GTA 3 and Vice City that had a significant impact on the gaming industry.

GTA: San Andreas Fan Project Turns the Sandbox Game Into a Horror Experience
Of course, the most popular Rockstar games are not usually known for being particularly terrifying. While the Grand Theft Auto games aren’t typically thought of as horror titles, they do contain some genuinely eerie easter eggs, such as the ghost girl in GTA Online. It’s not impossible to make a game scarier, and it appears that someone has succeeded in doing just that with one of the open-world games.
PCGamesN has discovered a new fan creation available for download on Itch.io. By utilising the “Grove Street 404” mod created by user Piotr Rycabel, you can experience GTA: San Andreas in a whole new light. Players are tasked with monitoring live feeds from various locations across the made-up state for signs of anything out of the ordinary. The point is to report anything out of the ordinary, which includes some strange occurrences that can happen at random. Even though this doesn’t sound horrifying, a quick glance at the screenshots reveals some truly terrifying content that players may encounter.
There are probably some readers who are immediately thinking of the indie horror game I’m On Observation Duty, which has a similar premise in that players must watch monitors to see if anything odd happens, usually with terrifying results. Fans of Observation Duty will likely enjoy this game, as Rycabel has stated that “Grove Street 404” was inspired by this game. Most notably, it’s available on Itch.io for no cost to anyone who’s interested.
The 25th anniversary of Grand Theft Auto may also pique the interest of diehard fans. Released on November 28, 1997, the first game not only established the franchise but also helped establish Rockstar (then known as DMA Design) as a major player in the video game industry. Since then, the Grand Theft Auto series has become a mainstay of the gaming industry, and with GTA VI on the horizon, Rockstar is far from done cashing in on its crown jewel franchise.
