Sony Santa Monica’s production team for God of War: Ragnarok “freaked out” in the months preceding up to the game’s release, according to the game’s director, Eric Williams. The arrival of God of War: Ragnarok has sparked widespread excitement among gamers, but the game’s development was fraught with setbacks. God of War 2, the sequel to 2018’s God of War, has been pushed back from its original release date of 2021 to sometime in 2022. Some people have speculated that this year’s release of God of War: Ragnarok may also be postponed.

Those who were fearful of yet another delay may now relax, as Sony Santa Monica confirmed last month that the game has gone gold. The weeks leading up to the release of God of War Ragnarok have been marked by glowing reviews, early glimpses at certain gameplay, and even some unexpected bits of promotion, such as a new teaser that unexpectedly stars Ben Stiller, LeBron James, and John Travolta.

Although the anticipation for God of War: Ragnarok has been building since the game’s release date was revealed, the development team may not have been quite convinced that it would live up to the hype. Director Eric Williams discussed the challenges of making a sequel to 2018’s highly acclaimed God of War in an interview with GQ. Williams claims he had faith in his team since he had worked with “guys who are at the top of what they do,” but he also acknowledges that certain members of the team were “freaking out” three months before the game was released.

Williams claims that some people thought God of War: Ragnarok wasn’t in the best possible spot. Despite initial concerns that the game was subpar, Williams later said that he had no idea “how they feel today,” suggesting that the team’s opinion of its most recent effort has changed. Review ratings for God of War: Ragnarok have been overwhelmingly positive, therefore it seems that the scepticism was unwarranted.

It’s clear that Sony Santa Monica’s creators “freaked out” a few months before God of War Ragnarok was scheduled to be published since they were faced with the enormous job of trying to match the experience of an already popular game. The director of God of War Ragnarok not only had to cope with the burden of following in the footsteps of the 2018 game, but also with the fact that he was replacing Cory Barlog. Williams indicated he intended to maintain the transition between God of War and Ragnarok as fluid as possible, and judging on the game’s early reviews, it seems the director has succeeded.
