Eminem Very Nearly Starred in a Grand Theft Auto Movie
If a Grand Theft Auto film had ever been greenlit, Eminem would have been cast in the lead role. Rockstar’s flagship open-world series has become a staple of the industry, drawing as much media controversy as dedicated fans. As such, the prospect of a film adaptation has been discussed by many for many years, but no such project has materialized.

Eminem Very Nearly Starred in a Grand Theft Auto Movie
He achieved his greatest success in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Though his music has brought him the most fame, Eminem also had a starring role in the semi-autobiographical film 8 Mile (2002). The film follows a young rapper from a lower-income background as he attempts to break into the music industry. It’s the only film in which Eminem has appeared, but that hasn’t stopped fans from casting him in additional flicks.
The BBC reports that a source has stated that there was interest in a Grand Theft Auto film starring Eminem. To discuss the possibility of an adaptation, game designer and personal friend of Rockstar co-founders Sam and Dan Houser Kirk Ewing appeared on Bugzy Malone’s Grandest Game podcast. According to him, the movie’s producers offered him $5 million to sign on the dotted line after they announced they had recruited Eminem. When Ewing informed Sam of this, the GTA co-creator said he was “not interested.” This occurred around the turn of the millennium, after the release of the third film in the series and at the height of Eminem’s popularity thanks to his album Marshall Mathers LP.
Many fans may still be curious about the possibility of a film adaptation of the Grand Theft Auto series, which is about to turn 25 years old and whose iconic open-world games continue to sell in the millions to this day. Even though the Houser brothers were sure their games were a huge media franchise when Ewing interviewed them, and even though the games are even more successful now, a film adaptation is highly unlikely.
A shame, but at least there’s Grand Theft Auto 6 in store for fans. There’s been a steady buildup of anticipation over the years, despite the fact that nobody knows when the next game will be released. Considering that Grand Theft Auto 5 came out in 2013, making it almost a decade since the last installment, it’s safe to say that the gaming industry and its fan base are more than ready for something new.
