The new owner’s intention to implement a fee for verification has been a major discussion topic since Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter. His recent tweets state that verification would cost $8 per month, which is far less than the $20 per month that was previously reported.

As of earlier today, Musk tweeted: “There should not be a hierarchy on Twitter between those with and without a blue checkmark. More power to the people! Price: $8.00 a month for the blue.”

He then said, “Price adjusted per nation according to purchasing power parity,” however it’s not clear if this is an official statement or simply Musk tossing out ideas.

Musk’s conversation continued, and he announced that paying customers will get less ad load, faster access to answers and mentions, the option to upload longer videos and audio, and other benefits. Musk said the firm has the potential to let publications “willing to collaborate” with Twitter to avoid the barrier. Musk said Twitter will be able to “reward content producers” with the money they get from the subscription system for verifying accounts.

Just hours after defending paywalled verification, Musk tweets a thread outlining the features. Musk responded to Stephen King’s complaint that he had to pay Twitter to preserve his blue check status late yesterday night. Following this, Musk said “The rent and the utility bills must be paid! Ad revenue alone will not be enough to sustain Twitter. Let’s say $8.”

Musk then responded to his critics with a tweet reading, “Before we put this into action, I will provide a more thorough explanation of our reasoning. The only way to win against the automated comments is to do this.”

Some Twitter users argue that verification isn’t a status symbol but rather a tool to stop fraudsters from catfishing as journalists, content providers, and celebrities, and that Musk’s message has left many users confused.

Twitter Blue, which allows users to edit their tweets and have access to new features beforehand, now costs $4.99 per month. Twitter Blue and the verification process are presently operating independently. As per Musk’s rumoured plan, verified Twitter users would have 90 days to upgrade to the paid service in order to preserve their blue checkmark.

This also implies that any person who isn’t presently verified may sign up and, in theory, become so in an instant. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that the project team has apparently been given until November 7 to produce the new functionality or face termination.
