Elden Ring Phantom Drops Enough Runes to Level 314 Times

A victorious intruder into the Elden Ring was rewarded with a staggering amount of Runes, enough to level a brand new Deprived character 314 times over. It’s true that a select few experienced players have managed to beat Elden Ring without the aid of Runes, but the vast majority of players consider them to be a must-have item.

Elden Ring PvP does not have much to offer save the possibility of chaotic and disorderly enjoyment. Though defeating Shardbearers is the most efficient way to farm Rune Arcs, a consumable needed to activate the Great Runes, their lack of utility as an invading force or summoned ally renders them a useless reward. The money of Elden Ring is runes, and these are one method that successful conquerors are rewarded for their efforts. For most players, the reward is a set amount that is a percentage of the most recent levelling cost associated with the player who was just killed. Theoretically, this would be a fair way to reward players who succeed in Elden Ring’s online multiplayer, but in practice, the amount of Runes awarded is so small that it’s faster and easier to defeat NPC enemies in the single-player mode.

However, a video posted to Reddit by MemoryLostInDarkness depicts a ghost unwittingly making up for the meagre offerings of Runes’ default settings. An invader can be seen wearing the Jar Helm, which increases the damage done by items crafted with the Cracked Pot or the Ritual Pot, while fighting inside the desecrated Church of Elleh. The brief battle depicted is quickly resolved by the intruder, whose Spark Aromatics fire a wide arc of sparks that kills the host and their Furled Finger.

Because the host perishes first, their Rune reward of 31 is revealed before anything else, but the invader’s grand total rises to 86,155,735. As a result, the Furled Finger must have released an absurdly high number of Runes—some 86 million. As a result, the most an invader can receive from a maxed-out player is just under 355,000, which is 4% of their victim’s most recent levelling cost. If the value is higher than that, they are almost certainly trying to cheat.

Most people would assume that this happened on PC, where hackers and cheaters have been known to plague previous FromSoftware releases, but MemoryLostInDarkness pointed out that it was actually on a PlayStation 4. It was speculated in the comments that the Furled Finger had used a hex editor to artificially increase their level beyond what would be possible via normal means. Since the health of summoned NPCs is capped to prevent unfair play, these guys had well under 1000 health and were easily defeated by a low-level character.
