EA Sports College Football Coming a Lot Later Than Expected
According to a recent announcement, the highly anticipated EA Sports College Football release date is still a ways off. Fans of the sport went wild when the first details of EA Sports’ college football game were released early last year. Finally, after nearly a decade, EA is making its way back to the college football field with NCAA Football. Now, EA has let it slip that college football video games won’t be back for a few more years.
Although the NCAA Football series was once a staple of EA Sports’ annual game lineup, no new instalments have been released in this series in quite some time. Starting in 1998 with NCAA Football, EA Sports has released a new college football game annually. However, the collaboration eventually broke up due to legal issues involving the likenesses of college players. EA Sports has now confirmed the release of EA Sports College Football will be delayed.
In a recent interview, EA Sports explained that the release of EA Sports College Football would be delayed until 2024, from the 2023 release window that had been previously leaked. Daryl Holt, EA’s vp and gm, said that the studio was “building the game from scratch,” meaning that they weren’t reusing an existing engine. As Holt explained, EA Sports has already secured the rights to the NCAA’s conferences and has confirmed the participation of several Division 1 schools in the game, despite the lengthy development time.
The release of EA Sports College Football may be a couple of years away, but the developer has already revealed a number of gameplay and presentational details. EA COO Blake Jorgenson announced last year that the game’s likenesses of players would be enhanced in EA Sports College Football through the use of a “database” that would allow for the rapid and seamless addition of new players. Some teams’ inclusion in the game has also been called into question; for example, Notre Dame has stated they will not appear in EA Sports’ College Football unless they are compensated for including their players in the game.
Once a staple of EA’s annual releases, college sports titles have been dormant from the developer since at least the early 2010s. The last NCAA football game was EA Sports’ NCAA Football 2014, released in July of 2013, and the last NCAA basketball game was EA Sports’ NCAA Basketball 2010, released in 2009. In 2006 and 2007, the developer also released NCAA Baseball games. The release of EA Sports College Football is a huge step back for the industry-leading sports video game developer’s commitment to college sports.
